Treasure Now

In recent years, a lot of research has gone into the practice of mindfulness and expressing gratitude for the everyday moments of life. This is all for good reason- our souls were not meant for the chronic, extended stress we are experiencing today. But this is more than just a current trend- it is biblical. God knew we couldn't live this way. He never intended us to.

When we are overly stressed or going through a really hard time, it IS hard to be grateful. There are so many things to bring us down, we are constantly bombarded with bad news, and your situation may feel pretty dire.

I actually hate when people tell me to treasure the time while my kids are little. I know it is a quick time, and I'll miss when they're little. I do agree with that sentiment. But let me tell you, it has wrecked me and my mental health. So me telling you to "treasure the now" makes with giggle with irony...

I do, however, know there is wisdom in treasuring what is happening in my life now. As I started to pray specifically, (see post) it began to get a little easier to see those small moments. I started to see these tiny little miracles throughout the day. One day it was seeing a bald eagle fly by. One day it was being able to get on the floor and enjoy playing with my little one, instead of being anxious about the day ahead. One day it was feeling overwhelming peace while I made dinner, even after a very busy day.

Life is overwhelming and hard. It is okay to say it. In your next breath however, breathe in the prayer for God to give you fresh eyes to see the good. To be able to look past the overwhelming.

I started a gratitude journal a few years ago. My goal was just one sentence each day. Pretty soon, I had a hard time keeping it to one sentence. I was starting to see more and more, and when it was a not-so-good day, it made me search. There was always something good. Another way I have done this is to write out a prayer list. I check mark it with the date when something occurs related to that prayer. You will be amazed how much you have to update your list. The main thing is, do "what works for you," but get to writing it down. It makes us more aware and holds us accountable to look.

When you're having a really bad day, you can go back through and read about all the good in your life. So, what can you treasure now, today, in this very moment?

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Colossians 4:2

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

Colossians 3:15

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

1Thessalonians 5:16-18

God, right now I am having a hard time treasuring the good in my life. (Tell Him about your hardships here). I pray that despite my circumstances, You give me fresh eyes to see. Open my eyes and my heart and help me see the good. Show me the little things and help me acknowledge these precious moments. I trust that You can help me with this.

Thank you that I can come to You.

In Your Precious Son's name, Amen.
